Paavo Airola

1918–1983 · Claimed a Ph.D. "received in Russia" and an N.D. "received in England"

Popularised juice fasting and "biological medicine" in America through a string of best-selling paperbacks that were fixtures of every health-food store in the 1970s.

On the record. No accredited institution has ever been documented for either of his claimed doctorates. He was profiled critically by Quackwatch. He was, nonetheless, one of the most widely read authors in the field during exactly the years this archive covers.

Airola died in 1983, squarely inside the window this collection covers, and he was on the lecture circuit constantly until then. How to Get Well was a standard reference behind the counter of American health-food stores for a decade.

No foundation or estate has been located. His books remain in print through Health Plus Publishers, which may be a starting point for tracing rights.
