Carlton Fredericks

1910–1987 · Ph.D. New York University, 1955 — in communications, not nutrition

Hosted "Design for Living" on WOR-AM New York six days a week from 1957 to 1987 — the longest-running nutrition programme of the era, and the template every broadcaster in the field copied.

On the record. Born Harold Frederick Caplan. His doctorate was in communications, though he was universally billed simply as "Dr. Fredericks." He pleaded guilty on 13 March 1945 to unlawful practice of medicine following a New York State Education Department investigation.

For thirty years Fredericks was the voice of American nutrition — not the most credentialed, not the most careful, but by an enormous margin the most heard. Six days a week for three decades is a volume of broadcast that no one else in this field approached, and the format he invented is still the format.

Given that run, he is among the most likely names to appear on tapes from this period.

Rights problem. No estate, foundation or archive has been located for Fredericks. If this collection holds his lectures, they are currently unpublishable, and finding an heir is worth real effort.
